Suleiman Shuaib, an aide to Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, has vehemently denied recent allegations linking Matawalle to terrorism and banditry in Nigeria. Shuaib emphasized that Matawalle has never engaged in or supported banditry or terrorism, either during his time as governor of Zamfara State or in his current ministerial role. He explained that Matawalle’s initial strategy as governor involved negotiating with bandits to restore peace and security. However, after some factions breached their agreements, Matawalle took decisive action against them.
The allegations come amid rising political tensions in Zamfara, especially following Governor Lawal’s recent statements about Matawalle’s supposed ties to banditry. Lawal has called for Matawalle’s resignation, escalating the controversy.
Shuaib urged Nigerians, including Governor Lawal, to refrain from targeting former leaders with baseless accusations, warning that such actions send a negative message to younger generations. He stressed that both Lawal and Matawalle share the primary goal of safeguarding the lives and property of Zamfara residents.
He added, “The Governor should focus on the promises he made during his campaign instead of chasing shadows. Zamfara is facing severe insecurity, and it is crucial for the governor to collaborate with Matawalle to address this pressing issue.”
Shuaib recounted that when Matawalle took office, insecurity was the foremost challenge. Following advice to engage with bandit leaders, he successfully held dialogue for nine months. However, after some bandits made excessive demands, Matawalle was compelled to confront them as they returned to violence. Shuaib concluded that Matawalle has never been involved in banditry.
