The France captain was substituted in the 81st minute, and later medical examinations confirmed a muscle injury, leaving the club anxiously awaiting his recovery ahead of the showdown with Barcelona on May 10.
In an official statement released on Monday, April 27, the club said: “Following tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with a semitendinosus muscle injury in his left leg. His recovery will be monitored.”
Real Madrid are scheduled to face Espanyol this weekend before travelling to the Camp Nou for the final El Clásico of the season. The club currently sits second in La Liga, 11 points behind leaders Barcelona, with only five matches remaining—meaning the title may already be decided before the clash.
The setback adds to a frustrating period for Madrid, who were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by Bayern Munich last week and are now at risk of finishing the season without a trophy.
Mbappé’s potential absence would be a significant blow, as he has been in sensational form this season, scoring 41 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions, including 24 in La Liga and 15 in Europe.
The timing is also concerning for the 27-year-old, with the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico set to begin on June 11, where he is expected to lead France.
