Conversely, seven states—Kano, Kwara, Ogun, Borno, Jigawa, Ondo, and Abia—have established committees to oversee the implementation. Lagos and Edo are the only states currently disbursing the minimum wage.
President Bola Tinubu enacted the new minimum wage law on July 29, 2024, following discussions with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria.
**Implementation Status**
Lagos State, according to Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso, was already paying more than the new minimum wage before it was officially adopted. Edo State has also confirmed it is paying the new wage.
In Kwara, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq formed an 18-member committee on August 1, 2024, to address the new wage implementation. Kano has set up an advisory committee, while Jigawa, Borno, Ondo, and Abia have also made progress in establishing their panels.
**Challenges and Responses**
Gombe’s Governor Inuwa Yahaya cited budget constraints as a significant obstacle to implementing the new wage, a sentiment echoed by Kogi’s Finance Commissioner Ashiwaju Ashiru Idris, who has not provided a timeline for the new wage rollout.
Plateau and Kebbi are still negotiating with labor unions regarding the new minimum wage, while Sokoto and Nasarawa have pledged to implement the wage, with ongoing plans and preparations.
Osun, Delta, and Benue are expected to form their committees soon, with commitments to enforce the new minimum wage and address any associated challenges.
