Obasanjo described the practice as immoral, stating, “It is not right for you to set your own salaries or allowances. This should be handled by the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission. Instead, you are awarding yourselves various allowances, which is not appropriate.”

He further condemned the practice, pointing out that even the Senate engages in this behavior and that, in some cases, the executive branch provides lawmakers with undue benefits. “You are essentially giving yourselves allowances that you are not entitled to,” he added, referencing the large sums some lawmakers have received.

In a broader critique, Obasanjo also claimed that many current public officials in Nigeria lack the qualities needed for effective leadership, suggesting they would be better suited for imprisonment. He argued that the proposed six-year single-term presidency would not resolve the country’s challenges and called for a reassessment of Nigeria’s democratic processes.
