In a statement from his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, Lokpobiri underscored the vital role of the oil sector in Nigeria’s economy, noting it accounts for around 85% of government revenue and is a major source of foreign exchange. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the oil and gas sector remains resilient, competitive, and profitable.

Lokpobiri outlined a two-pronged strategy focused on maximizing crude oil production while facilitating a transition to cleaner energy sources. “In the short term, we are committed to boosting revenue from crude oil production,” he stated, highlighting the government’s intent to address operational challenges and improve infrastructure.

He acknowledged the need for cost reduction, citing initiatives to streamline operations, particularly in upstream activities, to enhance competitiveness in a volatile global market. “A significant aspect of our vision is to align energy demands with environmental considerations. As the world shifts towards cleaner energy, Nigeria must follow suit, prioritizing natural gas as a cleaner alternative while exploring renewable energy options to diversify our energy mix,” he explained.

The minister also called on industry stakeholders to invest in sustainable practices, asserting that Nigeria’s transition would be pragmatic and tailored to local needs. He addressed ongoing security challenges in the Niger Delta, detailing efforts to bolster protection for oil infrastructure through enhanced security measures and community engagement. “We are fostering partnerships that encourage local ownership of critical assets and deploying military support, including from the Nigerian Navy and Joint Task Force, alongside community and economic empowerment initiatives to combat pipeline vandalism and oil theft,” he said.

Lokpobiri mentioned the introduction of technology-driven solutions, such as drone and satellite surveillance, to enhance the security framework of the oil industry. He also outlined a comprehensive reform package aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s oil and gas sector to attract investment and stimulate economic growth. Key reforms include the VAT Modification Order 2024 and Tax Incentives for deep offshore oil and gas production, designed to provide fiscal benefits to industry players while reducing contracting costs and timelines.

By promoting non-associated gas and deep-water developments, the Tinubu administration aims to position Nigeria as a competitive energy investment hub in Africa. Lokpobiri reiterated the importance of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act, advocating for a balanced approach that fosters local growth while ensuring foreign investment remains attractive.

He urged industry players to actively support Nigeria’s ambitious goal of increasing oil production by over one million barrels within the next 24 months. “We can no longer afford to hold valuable fields indefinitely. It’s time to either put them to work or relinquish them,” he asserted.

In conclusion, Lokpobiri’s address called on industry stakeholders to collaborate in securing Nigeria’s energy future, stating, “Nigeria’s petroleum resources hold significant value and potential. To realize this potential, we must confront our challenges and capitalize on our strengths for shared prosperity and energy security.
