Minister Of Interior Dismisses Need To Defend NCoS In Light Of Bobrisky ControversyThe Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has stated that he will not defend the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) regarding its management of allegations against Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, a prominent cross-dresser. During a two-day retreat for senior officials from the ministry and its paramilitary agencies, Tunji-Ojo underscored the significance of reputation management and ethical standards within these organizations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The controversy emerged from claims that Bobrisky did not complete his six-month jail sentence as mandated by the court. However, a panel recently set up by the Federal Government determined that there was no evidence to substantiate these claims, confirming that Bobrisky served his full term. The panel did, however, report that he was granted certain privileges while incarcerated, which it labeled as “unethical and unacceptable.”

The minister emphasized that although the panel dismissed the principal allegations, the situation revealed a pressing need for ethical reflection and improvements within the NCoS. He warned that he would not protect the agency from scrutiny if it failed to uphold its responsibilities, especially regarding issues that compromise its integrity and public trust.

The retreat, themed “United Front for a Secure Nation and Future,” saw participation from various paramilitary services, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Federal Fire Service (FFS), and the NCoS. Tunji-Ojo urged these agencies, particularly the NCoS, to embrace a transformative approach to inmate rehabilitation, emphasizing the importance of human rights and dignity.

He remarked, “The federal ministry of interior plays a crucial role in our internal security. Every effort from each of you is vital because without security, investment, tourism, and industrialization are impossible. There can be no stability in the capital or money markets, nor can we create employment. In essence, there can be no productivity without security.”

Tunji-Ojo stressed the necessity for ministry personnel to align their priorities with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and manage their reputations effectively. He called on paramilitary agencies to be bold and ambitious in their initiatives, stating, “You all have a critical role in the national security architecture; now is the time to be audacious and tenacious, taking Nigeria to the next level.”

He added that the NCoS must become a space where hopes are renewed, not stifled, and where human rights are respected, emphasizing the importance of treating individuals with dignity.

Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, highlighted that the retreat serves as an opportunity for staff and agencies to renew their commitment to the government’s core mandate. She encouraged the personnel to dedicate themselves to creating an environment in which every Nigerian feels safe, protected, and empowered. “Today’s gathering is more than just a contract signing ceremony; it is a covenant of accountability and a pledge to fulfill Mr. President’s renewed hope agenda,” Dr. Ajani stated\
