The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern caution against the importation of syringes from foreign nations. The warning, conveyed during a courtesy visit by the new executive members of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) to NAFDAC’s office in Lagos, emphasized the need for clearing agents at the nation’s ports to prioritize the interests of the country over personal gains.
Director-General Adeyeye further urged the customs agents to collaborate with NAFDAC in addressing the issue of Nigerian food rejections by the European Union, United States, and other Western countries. She stressed the importance of collective efforts to ensure the acceptance of Nigerian food products on the international market.
During a recent facility tour, Director-General Adeyeye expressed admiration for the substantial investments made by a local pharmaceutical company in the production of syringes within Nigeria. She highlighted that the facility’s standards were comparable to those found in the United States or any European country.
Despite the impressive local production capabilities, Director-General Adeyeye revealed her dismay upon entering the company’s warehouse. Over 1.5 billion units of syringes were reportedly unsold, attributed to sluggish sales exacerbated by the influx of imported syringes into the country. This influx occurred despite the imposition of high import duties aimed at safeguarding the local market.
In conclusion, NAFDAC’s stern warning underscores the importance of safeguarding the interests of local industries and promoting self-sufficiency in the production of essential medical supplies, such as syringes, to ensure the sustainability and growth of the pharmaceutical sector in Nigeria.
