Prof. Mohammad Mohammad, the President of MDCAN, conveyed this sentiment while presenting a communique issued at the conclusion of the Association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Uyo on Sunday.

Mohammad highlighted the association’s concern that the health budget in the country significantly deviates from the Abuja Declaration, which recommends a minimum of 15 percent budgetary allocation to the sector.

He called upon governments at various levels to enhance their budgetary commitments to the health sector to align with the Abuja Declaration.

Furthermore, the president of the association urged governments to implement strategies to boost the economy, thereby increasing per capita spending on health.

Acknowledging the rising cost of healthcare due to inflation, Mohammad emphasized the inadequacy of health insurance coverage, pointing out its poor status.

He stated, “Government at all levels should strive to enhance budgetary allocation to the health sector to achieve the Abuja Declaration of at least 15 percent. Consequently, the government should implement strategies to improve the nation’s economy, thereby enhancing per capita spending on the health of the population.”
