Represented by Roselyn Ajayi, the agency’s Zonal Director, Adeyeye announced that NAFDAC plans to conduct advocacy visits to various community stakeholders, including churches, mosques, traditional rulers, and opinion leaders, to educate them on how to avoid purchasing harmful and counterfeit products. She stated, “Our survey indicates a high prevalence of substandard and falsified products across the nation.”
The need for this campaign, according to Adeyeye, stems from the survey’s findings, which underscored the necessity for increased awareness and engagement among healthcare providers to combat the distribution of substandard medications. She noted, “Counterfeiters are becoming increasingly sophisticated, exploiting technological advancements to their advantage, making this sensitization effort vital.”
Adebayo Gbadamosi, Chairman of the Oyo State Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, also addressed the issue, urging the public to rely on registered pharmacists rather than unqualified sellers. He highlighted the importance of being vigilant, stating, “Some drugs exhibit scratch codes that can verify their authenticity. If consumers are well-informed and refuse to buy counterfeit medications, it will deter quacks from operating.”
