The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal had earlier ousted Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on October 2, declaring Ombugadu as the winner. However, dissatisfied with the ruling, Sule sought recourse at the Court of Appeal, where he was reinstated as the victor.
Addressing journalists in Lafia, Hanatu John, the leader of the protesting women groups, emphasized the essence of democracy in reflecting the will of the people through popular votes. John questioned the electoral process that did not declare the candidate with the highest votes as the winner, expressing concern about the state’s current insecurity affecting residents’ access to farmlands.
John called upon the Supreme Court to deliver justice in the case for the greater good of humanity. Furthermore, she appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the international community to intervene, emphasizing the need to preserve democracy in Nasarawa State and the entire country.
The protest, which commenced on December 25, sought to draw attention to the perceived electoral injustice experienced since March. Margaret Alu, another protester, highlighted the anguish felt by the women, stating that their happiness had been compromised since Governor Sule was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the March 18 governorship election.
The women, donning black attire and brandishing placards with messages such as “Count Every Vote: Protect Democracy in Nasarawa State” and “Bring back our mandate: Our votes are our Rights,” reiterated their call for justice. The ongoing peaceful demonstrations underscored their determination to persist until their perceived mandate was restored.
The protest not only focuses on the electoral dispute but also addresses broader issues, including insecurity in the state and the impact on residents, particularly women who have faced challenges such as displacement from farmlands and the loss of livelihoods.
