Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has detailed how she managed to attend the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in New York, despite not being officially nominated by the Nigerian government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In an exclusive interview with Premium Times on Sunday, she explained that she registered online as a senator, leveraging her past participation in IPU meetings to secure accreditation.

“I registered online as a senator. My suspension does not take away my legitimacy. Since I attended the same event last year, I was already on the mailing list. Once I got my pass, I bought my ticket and funded my entire trip,” she stated.

Akpoti-Uduaghan clarified that she personally financed her travel and participation in the event, securing approval to attend independently.

This was not her first appearance at an IPU event—she had previously accompanied Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the 148th IPU General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, in March 2024, as part of Nigeria’s official delegation. During that assembly, Akpabio called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages, stressing the need for humanitarian aid access.

Explaining her attendance at the recent New York IPU meeting, Akpoti-Uduaghan revealed that her involvement in previous Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) meetings played a crucial role. She also pointed out that IPU events are not strictly for government officials, as civil society organizations and individuals can also participate.

She further clarified that she traveled on a regular Nigerian passport, not an official government-issued one.

Dismissing her six-month Senate suspension as unlawful, she insisted that it does not invalidate her status as an elected senator. However, the terms of her suspension explicitly bar her from identifying as a senator both locally and internationally during the suspension period.

Despite these restrictions, she attended the IPU meeting in her official capacity, maintaining that she remains the legitimate representative of her constituents.

In the interview, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged a plot to arrest her upon her return to Nigeria, further fueling concerns over political suppression.
