The Red Chamber confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that the session will be dedicated to reflecting on Buhari’s legacy and his contributions to Nigeria’s national growth and development.

The announcement follows a similar tribute organised by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja last Thursday, where President Bola Tinubu praised Buhari’s leadership, calling him a man who “led the country with restraint, governed with dignity, and bore the burdens of leadership without complaint.”

Buhari, Nigeria’s second-longest-serving leader, was laid to rest last week in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, during a solemn ceremony attended by dignitaries from across the country and abroad.

He served as civilian President from 2015 to 2023, and previously as military Head of State between 1983 and 1985.

Senate Debunks Rumours of New States

Meanwhile, the Senate on Tuesday dismissed social media claims that new states had been approved by the Constitution Review Committee.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, responding to a motion by Senator Abdul Ningi, clarified that although over 42 proposals for state creation have been received, none has met the constitutional criteria or passed legislative scrutiny.

“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is extremely rigorous,” Akpabio said.

He also cautioned the public against acting on unverified reports, revealing that some communities had begun preparations for managing “new states” based on false online narratives.

The Senate President urged citizens to rely solely on official updates from the National Assembly regarding any constitutional amendments or similar matters.
