New Committee Established By Power Minister To Resolve Grid IssuesThe Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formed a forensic investigative committee to address ongoing national grid failures that have resulted in significant power outages across the country. Adelabu’s concerns were highlighted in a statement from his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, following two major grid disturbances within a single week.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In response to these issues, Adelabu convened an emergency meeting with leaders from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) over the weekend. He expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, noting that these collapses jeopardize the advancements made in the power sector, which recently achieved a record generation and distribution of 5,527 megawatts—the highest in three years.

The newly established committee will investigate the root causes of the grid incidents and recommend measures to enhance the national grid’s stability. Its mandate includes evaluating ongoing projects such as the Presidential Power Initiative and the Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project, as well as probing possible sabotage. The committee will also conduct a thorough review to identify necessary investments and technical improvements needed for a more resilient grid.

Additionally, a technical team has been tasked with assessing critical points within the grid to identify vulnerabilities and propose solutions to prevent future outages. Adelabu explained that a partial grid collapse occurred on October 14 due to a line tripping at the Jebba Transmission Substation and issues at the Osogbo Substation. Although restoration efforts faced initial challenges, the grid was fully restored by October 16.

He clarified that the subsequent issues were not new collapses but part of ongoing restoration. A reported grid failure on October 19 was actually a controlled shutdown following a transformer explosion at the Jebba Substation, which was resolved in two hours. Adelabu emphasized that these events were disturbances rather than complete collapses.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the transformer explosion was linked to aging equipment and not to the earlier grid failures. The investigation team comprises key officials, including Engr. Nafisat Ali (Independent System Operator), Dr. Chidi Ike (NERC Commissioner), and other senior representatives from relevant agencies. They are expected to submit their findings by November 1, 2024.
