The new gender disinformation desk, inaugurated on October 12, 2024, aims to tackle the global surge of misleading narratives that disproportionately affect women. The desk will critically analyze and combat harmful gendered misinformation using fact-checking tools and media literacy principles to provide the public with accurate information.
Caleb Ijioma, Executive Director of RoundCheck, highlighted the escalating effects of gender-based disinformation, stating, “Disinformation surrounding gender has become a significant issue that shapes societal perceptions.” He acknowledged that while false narratives affect both genders, women face a disproportionate impact, prompting the establishment of this dedicated desk to equip researchers with the necessary tools and training to analyze such narratives critically.
The statement emphasized the global concern of gender disinformation, which often targets women through harmful stereotypes, hyper-sexualization, and political maneuvers intended to shame and discredit them. According to the U.S. Department of State, such narratives can lead to severe consequences, including online violence and harassment, particularly against women in media, politics, and leadership positions. A UNESCO report noted that over 73% of female journalists worldwide have experienced online violence, frequently stemming from gendered disinformation.
In Africa, where social media significantly influences public opinion, the ramifications of gender disinformation can be profound. A study by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies highlighted the increase of misinformation campaigns across the continent, with gendered disinformation playing a crucial role in perpetuating discrimination and social exclusion.
The urgency of addressing these issues is paramount, as misinformation about gender can shape societal attitudes, restrict women’s participation in public life, and deepen inequalities. RoundCheck’s gender disinformation desk is particularly vital in regions where digital spaces are rapidly expanding.
The desk will employ advanced research methodologies and fact-checking tools to monitor and respond to gender-related misinformation across various platforms. “This initiative is expected to be instrumental in reducing the spread of false information and improving public understanding of gender issues,” said Ijioma.
By creating a reliable platform for identifying and debunking gender disinformation, RoundCheck aims to promote a more informed and equitable dialogue on gender matters. The organization encourages public and media engagement with the new desk to support efforts against the dissemination of false information.
