During the inauguration of the base on Saturday, Senator Karimi explained that the initiative aims to assist the military and other security agencies in responding swiftly to combat terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.
“I conceived the idea of the military base in January of this year to support the Nigerian military and security agencies in their efforts against terrorists, kidnappers, and criminals whose activities around the Kogi and Kwara border—where expansive forests are becoming havens for criminal elements—have raised national concerns,” he stated.
He expressed hope that the establishment of a standard military base would deter criminals and restore peace and security to communities in Kogi and Kwara states. “My commitment to helping the military protect the lives of citizens and drive criminals out of our rural communities inspired the construction and furnishing of this facility,” he added.
The military base features two hostels with 85 beds for soldiers, fully furnished for comfortable living, an armory, and office spaces for the base commander, among other amenities.
In his remarks, the Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Jerry Omadara, noted that the base would enable the army to maintain security in the area. “The establishment of this forward operating base will create a security chain in Kogi State, ensuring the safety of our people and allowing the Nigerian Army to take firm control of security in this region, including Yagba East and beyond,” he stated.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, represented by Major General Obinna Onubogu, GOC 2 Division, commended the senator for his initiative. “As Chief of Army Staff, I affirm that partnerships like this reassure the Nigerian Army that the civilian populace appreciates our efforts in combating insecurity nationwide. Kogi State is vital to this mission as it serves as a central hub in Nigeria. Bases like this are crucial for extending our operations to both host states and neighboring regions,” Lagbaja noted.
