Currently, Nigeria’s power generation fluctuates between 4,000 and 4,500MW for a population of over 200 million people, according to Naija News. However, Adelabu noted a significant milestone, with power generation reaching 5,000MW on May 3, 2024, marking the first time in three years this level was achieved.
The minister emphasized that with the improvements seen over the past year, Nigeria is on track to reach 6,000MW of power generation by year-end. This ambitious goal reflects ongoing enhancements in the power sector.
Regarding metering, Adelabu mentioned that the presidential metering initiative is set to provide two million meters annually over the next five years. This initiative aims to improve the sector’s liquidity and reduce the reliance on estimated billing.
Adelabu highlighted, “On May 3, 2024, we generated, transmitted, and distributed 5,003.45MW of power. We have significantly improved from our previous state, and our goal is to achieve 6,000MW before the end of this year, setting a historic record for Nigeria.”
He attributed the progress to a series of infrastructural upgrades over the past year, particularly through the ongoing Presidential Power Initiative. This program has played a crucial role in enhancing Nigeria’s power assets.
The minister revealed that the government is finalizing contracts for Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative. In November 2023, President Tinubu and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz signed an accelerated performance agreement to expedite the initiative’s implementation, aiming to improve electricity supply in Nigeria.
Adelabu outlined the infrastructure improvements from the pilot phase, including an additional grid evacuation capacity of 2,230MW and an expected additional 183MW to be commissioned by the end of June 2024. Furthermore, there are plans to rehabilitate 15 brownfield substations by August 2024 and construct 22 greenfield substations by October 2024
