Police in Johannesburg apprehended a 48-year-old Nigerian man and a 43-year-old South African citizen on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, by Superintendent Xolani Fihla, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the arrests occurred during an operation at the Houghton Hotel.

“The operation, conducted jointly by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit and the Johannesburg Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (JHB-DPCI), took place on April 8, 2024,” the statement explained.

Acting on intelligence regarding alleged drug-related activities at the Houghton Hotel in Houghton, law enforcement officers targeted a specific room upon arrival. Inside, they discovered approximately 5kg of Crystal Meth, an illicit substance.

Further investigation led authorities to another male individual in the hotel’s restaurant, who was linked to the rented room where the drugs were found. The seized narcotics are estimated to have a street value of around R800,000.

Both suspects, the Nigerian national aged 48 and the South African aged 43, were taken into custody and detained at Norwood SAPS.
