The bishop was arrested in Yola, Adamawa State, and subsequently transported to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters in Abuja. In a statement issued by Pastor Salisu Waziri and shared with journalists in Jalingo, Taraba State, the church expressed its dismay over the arrest and called for his immediate release.

Pastor Waziri alleged that the arrest was orchestrated by members of a breakaway faction of the church and that NIS operatives detained Bishop Nhiwatiwa despite his possession of all necessary documents. Reports suggest that the church has been divided since the last international conference in the U.S., where some members endorsed same-sex marriage.

At the time of this report, the Taraba State Government has shut down all church branches in the state to prevent further unrest among members vying for control of church assets. There are concerns that additional church members, including pastors, may face arrest.

“Bishop Nhiwatiwa arrived in Yola for a meeting with members of the Southern Nigerian Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church on 23 August 2024. However, he was detained by the NIS at the meeting venue. After several hours in detention, he was confined to his hotel with security before being transported to Abuja on 24 August 2024,” the statement read.
