Nigerian Workers Under Siege! Shehu Sani Exposes 5 Shocking Forces Crippling Salaries
As Nigeria marked Workers’ Day 2025, former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, drew attention to the severe economic challenges facing the nation’s workforce, spotlighting five major factors that continue to devalue workers’ earnings.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a post shared via his verified account on Thursday, Sani acknowledged the resilience and commitment of Nigerian workers but decried the ongoing economic strain eroding the real worth of their wages.
He identified the top culprits behind the decline in workers’ purchasing power as:
-
Fuel subsidy removal
-
Rising electricity and telecom tariffs
-
Soaring inflation
-
The depreciating Naira
-
Surging rent costs
Sani emphasized the urgent need for government intervention, warning that discussions around a new minimum wage may amount to little if inflation and other economic pressures remain unchecked.
“A minimum wage that fails to keep pace with the surging cost of essentials like food, housing, transport, and electricity is merely symbolic,” he noted, adding, “It’s not just about raising wages — it’s about preserving their value.”
Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1, honours the contributions of the labour force and typically features rallies, speeches, and renewed advocacy for policies that support fair wages and better working conditions in Nigeria.
