It is truly a moment of surprise and debate as former governors, considered by some to have had underwhelming terms in office, find themselves on President Bola Tinubu’s second batch of ministerial nominees. Public reactions have been a mixture of shock and incredulity, particularly given the contentious political history of these former governors. Bello Metawale, notably, has been tagged as the ‘worst governor of Zamfara State.’ After leaving office, his successor ordered police to raid his home and reclaim what were claimed to be stolen government vehicles.
Similarly, Gboyega Oyetola, the former governor of Osun State, failed in his re-election bid, losing to the current governor, Ademola Adeleke. His inclusion on the ministerial nominee list has raised several eyebrows. CONTINUE READING
Abubakar Bagudu, the former governor of Kebbi State, also carries a controversial past. Known to be an associate of the late Sani Abacha, he was indicted for aiding the former head of state in concealing stolen Nigerian funds in the United States.
Lastly, Simon Lalong of Plateau State, known for leaving a pile of debts for his successor and losing his senatorial bid to opposition due to his performance as a governor, also made the list. His state was even lost to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
The list of ministerial nominees, brought to the Senate by former Speaker and current Chief of Staff to Tinubu, Femi Gbajiabiamila, completes the ministerial slots for the remaining eleven states. As this news circulates, it’s clear that the political discourse in Nigeria will remain heated and engaging in the days to come.
