Nigerians Reacts Over Sanusi’s Diplomatic Role In Niger’s Coup Resolution

Lagos, Nigeria – August 10, 2023

Nigerians have expressed a mix of curiosity and skepticism following the revelation that former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, embarked on a mediation trip to Niamey, Niger’s capital, to engage with the military leaders behind the recent coup. The news comes just days before a crucial ECOWAS summit aimed at resolving the ongoing Sahel region crisis.

Sanusi, a prominent figure known for his deep ties with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, revealed details of his mission on Nigerian state television. He clarified that he was not representing the Nigerian government, but intended to convey a “message” to President Tinubu.

On social media and in interviews, Nigerians shared a spectrum of opinions regarding Sanusi’s involvement:

Chinwe Okonkwo (@chinwe_24): It’s puzzling that Sanusi is getting involved in this coup situation. Is he acting as a diplomat or an envoy? We need clarity on his role and intentions. #NigeriaNigerMediation

Ahmed Yusuf (@AhmedYusuf_): Sanusi is a respected voice, and if he can help bring stability to Niger, that’s a positive thing. But it’s important that his actions align with Nigeria’s foreign policy. #SanusiDiplomacy

Adaobi Nwosu (@AdaobiN): I have my doubts about this whole mediation thing. Are we sure Sanusi isn’t trying to play both sides? We need transparency and accountability in this process. #CrisisMediation

Blessing Ojo (@BlessedBee): With ECOWAS considering military intervention, Sanusi’s efforts might help prevent bloodshed. Let’s give peace a chance and hope for the best. #NigerCrisis

Emeka Adebayo (@Emeka_28): I trust Sanusi’s judgment. His friendship with Tinubu could be an asset in resolving this crisis peacefully. Let’s not jump to conclusions. #SanusiMediation

Sanusi’s involvement has added a layer of complexity to the already delicate situation in Niger. As the ECOWAS summit approaches, all eyes will be on President Tinubu’s response and the potential impact of Sanusi’s mediation efforts.

While Tinubu has indicated a preference for diplomatic solutions, the possibility of military intervention by ECOWAS to restore Niger’s democratically elected government looms in the background, raising concerns about the region’s stability and the implications for neighboring Nigeria.

The coming days will reveal whether Sanusi’s visit will bear fruit and contribute to the resolution of the Sahel crisis or if it will add further uncertainty to an already volatile situation.
