NLC Grants Obi Permission To Exit LP, Unveils Stance

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership is determined to oust Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party, asserting that they will not relent until this goal is achieved.

In an interview with Sunday BUSHRADIOGIST, NLC spokesman Benson Upah reaffirmed the union’s stance, declaring that despite what they perceive as an ‘illegal’ national convention that reinstated Abure, they refuse to acknowledge his leadership as legitimate.

“The position of the NLC on this matter remains steadfast. Abure holds no recognition from us. This is not merely about his removal; he simply does not hold any standing in our eyes,” Upah stated emphatically.

This development coincides with retired workers, represented by the Lagos Assembly of Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists, demanding the resignation of both the embattled national chairman of the Labour Party and NLC President, Joe Ajaero, amidst their ongoing leadership dispute.

Furthermore, tensions seem to escalate as the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, insisting on broader consultations, which were allegedly disregarded.

During an X Space session organized by Parallel Facts, Obi revealed his frustrations, explaining his absence from the convention, and hinted at potential exploration of alternative political platforms, despite earlier assurances of the 2027 ticket.

While Upah acknowledged Obi’s freedom to choose his political path, he emphasized that the NLC would not impede his decision. He described Obi as an asset, regardless of his future political affiliation.

“The right of choice belongs to Mr. Obi. Should he opt to depart from the party, we respect his decision. However, if he opts to stay, Peter Obi remains a valuable asset,” Upah concluded.

The situation remains dynamic, with the NLC firm in its stance against Abure’s leadership and Obi’s future political endeavors, underscoring the ongoing turbulence within the Labour Party.
