Speaking in an interview with Signature TV, Bishop Egbonu explained that he initially traveled to Sokoto for a church event but took the opportunity to visit Kanu and offer comfort. What he encountered, however, was unexpected.
“I anticipated meeting someone burdened by long months of detention, but Kanu was calm, composed, and unwavering,” Egbonu said, noting that the imprisoned leader showed no fear or agitation.
According to the bishop, Kanu reassured him not to worry and urged that people back home remain peaceful. He emphasized that his stance against violence has not changed and stressed that any violent actions could misrepresent his followers in the eyes of the international community.
Bishop Egbonu reflected on the encounter, saying, “I went there to console him, but it was he who encouraged me. He urged us to stay calm, advise our people to avoid violence, and affirmed that he is not involved in harming anyone. His mission is not to lead our people into violence, and he cautioned that any violent actions would risk being perceived as terrorism internationally. In that moment, it was truly he who uplifted me.”
