According to a local source who spoke with Daily Trust, the NSCDC operatives were returning from an operation aimed at shutting down illegal oil bunkering sites when the attack occurred. The source added that Igbomotoru has recently seen a surge in unrest and illegal oil-related activities due to its difficult-to-access waterways.

The ambush, which occurred near the Koluama creeks—a known hotspot for oil theft and militant operations—was reportedly well-coordinated. The attackers, wielding high-powered firearms, opened fire on the patrol boat, overpowering the security officers.

One officer was fatally shot during the confrontation and later died from his wounds, while several others sustained injuries and are now receiving treatment in a hospital in Yenagoa, the state capital.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a separate attack just a week ago, in which suspected saboteurs bombed the Ogboinbiri/Obiobi 24-inch gas pipeline, operated by Oando Plc, which supplies gas to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) facility in Bonny, Rivers State.

It’s also worth noting that the Igbomotoru community had been previously raided by military forces in a manhunt for a notorious militant leader allegedly involved in the killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama, Delta State.

When contacted, NSCDC spokesperson in Bayelsa, Solomon Ogbere, confirmed the attack but said a full report was still being compiled.

“We’ve received information about the incident, but I’m waiting on the officer-in-charge to provide a detailed briefing. What you’ve heard is not far from the truth, but I can’t give specific details until I have the full picture. By Monday, I’ll be in a better position to speak authoritatively on the matter,” he stated.
