This position was made known by the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Jonathan Vatsa, during a courtesy visit to the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Minna.

Vatsa credited the Nigerian media for preventing former President Olusegun Obasanjo from securing a third term in office, stating that a robust media campaign was instrumental in halting his attempt.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to fostering a strong working relationship with journalists to ensure accurate and effective coverage of its activities.

Highlighting the critical role of the media in governance and development, Vatsa noted that visionary leaders strategically utilize media platforms to promote their agendas and drive progress.

“If not for the relentless campaign by the Nigerian media, Obasanjo might have remained in power beyond his constitutionally allowed eight years, and Nigeria might not be enjoying the level of democracy it does today,” he said.

Admitting that there has been a communication gap between the Niger State Government and the media — especially the Correspondents’ Chapel — Vatsa stressed the urgency of closing that gap, reiterating that no government can achieve success in isolation from the media.

Vatsa, who is also a former Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, underscored the media’s vital role in governance and urged political leaders and officeholders to cultivate healthy relationships with journalists.

“There must be no disconnect between politicians and the media,” he advised. “Let us strengthen our existing partnership and explore new ways to collaborate more effectively.”
