The statement alleges that Obaseki disappeared from the state capital, Benin City, on Friday, November 8, after secretly fleeing the Government House by bus. Okpebholo raised suspicions over why Obaseki would resort to such evasive measures if he truly enjoys the support he claims. He further suggested that the Governor might be planning to leave the country through land borders, distracting the public with fabricated narratives to cover his tracks.
Addressing accusations that he had failed to invite Obaseki to the upcoming inauguration, Okpebholo dismissed the claim as “absurd,” stating that Obaseki had made no efforts to facilitate a peaceful transfer of power or initiate any meetings with him. “Since I was declared the winner, Obaseki has done everything to hinder the transition process. He never invited me for talks or even congratulated me,” Okpebholo said.
He reaffirmed his clear victory in the September 21 election and expressed confidence that the tribunal would uphold his win. Okpebholo mocked Obaseki’s failure to accept his defeat, stating, “Edo people have rejected the continuation of Obaseki’s government through his chosen successor, Asue Ighodalo.”
Okpebholo also warned Obaseki that he would face legal consequences once his immunity expires, emphasizing that he would not tolerate further distortion of the truth. “When his immunity lapses, Obaseki will be held accountable in court for his actions,” Okpebholo declared.
Looking ahead, Okpebholo assured the people of Edo State that a new era of development was on the horizon. He urged Obaseki to face the failures of his administration, account for any misappropriated funds, and apologize for the stagnation under his leadership. “It’s time for Edo to move forward,” Okpebholo concluded, calling on citizens to ignore Obaseki’s “irresponsible” statements and support the incoming government for a brighter future.
