In a statement issued on Wednesday, Chairman Chris Biose and Secretary Solomon Akeni responded to the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests sweeping the nation.
The council expressed disappointment that the President’s speech did not address the key issues affecting the populace. They urged President Tinubu to move past mere rhetoric and confront the pressing problems confronting the country.
The statement also condemned the violence, looting, and damage to public property that have occurred during some of the protests.
“The President acknowledged the severe suffering of the people but failed to offer new policy measures to meet the protesters’ demands,” the statement noted.
The council expressed dismay over President Tinubu’s omission of critical issues such as the widespread killings of farmers by armed Fulani herdsmen, which has significantly impacted food production in Nigeria.
“It is unreasonable to think that he is unaware that this situation is central to the failure of Nigerian farmers to produce enough food for local consumption in recent years,” the statement continued.
The council also criticized the administration for its perceived lack of accountability and excessive spending on trivial matters while many Nigerians face severe hunger. They highlighted the president’s silence on issues like oil theft and the brutal killings of citizens by police officers.
The Delta Obedient Elders’ Council has called for a more responsive and accountable approach from the President to address the country’s urgent issues.
