The incident occurred during school hours on Wednesday when students and workers noticed a strong, unpleasant odour spreading across the school premises. Moments later, many began experiencing breathing difficulties, weakness and other symptoms believed to be linked to exposure to the substance.

Those affected were promptly taken to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for treatment. As of Wednesday, some victims remained under medical observation due to persistent discomfort, respiratory distress and, in certain cases, loss of consciousness.

The latest incident has heightened concerns among residents, marking the third reported gas-related emergency in the area within two months.

In April, approximately 40 students were hospitalized following a similar occurrence, while another incident in May reportedly affected about 100 students, prompting emergency medical intervention.

The Ogun State Government had previously disclosed that environmental monitoring devices deployed in the area detected methane gas as the likely source of the recurring emissions.

Reacting to the latest development, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed that the government was aware of the situation and had already traced the source of the emission through installed monitoring equipment.

According to Oresanya, investigations revealed that the gas leak originated from a location behind Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode. He added that the state government has commenced measures aimed at addressing the problem and preventing future incidents.
