Addressing participants at the seventh biennial conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria in Lagos on Tuesday, Oloyede stressed the illegality of underage admissions and urged an end to all forms of unauthorized admissions.
Speaking on the conference theme, “Effective University Governance: Role of Stakeholders,” Oloyede underscored the importance of accountability, data protection, and national integrity, stating that any irregularity in admissions procedures constitutes a violation of the law.
He recounted an incident involving a 15-year-old student who applied for a postgraduate program abroad, which prompted queries about the plausibility of such a case in Nigeria. Oloyede clarified that the student had graduated from a university but had not been admitted through JAMB, confirming details with the institution’s Vice Chancellor, who was not in office during the student’s admission.
Additionally, Oloyede warned against the illegal admission of diploma students, citing a concerning trend where a significant number of diploma students were admitted from a single university last year. He called for collective accountability among stakeholders, emphasizing the potential harm to Nigeria’s education system posed by such practices.
