In a 2021 opinion piece published by Premium Times, Onwenu articulated her preference for a simple and private burial, free from elaborate ceremonies. “Do it quickly, quietly, and privately,” she requested. She hoped her loved ones would mourn her loss but keep the occasion understated, focusing instead on celebrating her life with prayers and light-hearted moments.
Onwenu also expressed a desire for her friends to celebrate her while she was still alive, rather than after her passing. “If my friends want to celebrate me, they should do so while I am alive, so that I can enjoy it with them,” she stated.
She critiqued the extravagant displays of wealth often associated with Nigerian funerals, referencing the debate surrounding the opulent funeral of Obi Cubana’s mother. Onwenu advocated for more modest and meaningful ways to honor the deceased, especially during times of widespread hardship.
Onyeka Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned music, film, advocacy, journalism, and politics. She held influential roles such as chairing the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and serving as a judge on the X Factor series. Her enduring contributions include memorable songs like “One Love” and “You and I,” as well as her autobiography, “My Father’s Daughter,” which have significantly impacted Nigerian culture.
