Chicago State University (CSU) has verified that the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was once a student of the institution and indeed graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1979. In a formal statement issued to CBS Broadcasting Inc., more commonly known as CBS News, the university acknowledged receiving requests about Tinubu’s academic records. The statement reads: “As an educational institution, we are sometimes approached to provide details concerning student records.”
However, CSU clarified that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a U.S. federal law, safeguards the confidentiality of student records and sets boundaries on the details an institution can disclose publicly.
The statement elaborates, “In August 2023, a plea was submitted to the U.S. federal court urging the university to release educational records pertaining to Bola Tinubu, the President of Nigeria and an alumnus of CSU. In response, the university can affirmatively state that President Tinubu was a student at CSU and completed his bachelor’s degree in 1979. The scope of FERPA, however, restricts us from divulging any additional details unless given explicit consent or directed by a court order.” CONTINUE READING
Chicago State University further assured the authenticity and reliability of its records about President Tinubu’s graduation requirements and degree issuance. They emphasized that they are not directly involved in the Nigerian legal proceedings that initiated this inquiry.
CSU concluded, “Our approach to the request concerning Tinubu’s academic credentials aligns perfectly with our institutional practices, policies, and U.S. federal legislation. We maintain a consistent stance, handling any third-party request for student information in a similar fashion.”
