The former Kano governor provided an overview of the various types of herdsmen and their roles in the country’s pastoral landscape. He stated, “You are all aware that there are four types of herdsmen: the ones that are settled at home and have their livestock around their residences, causing no issues whatsoever.
“Another group consists of herdsmen who move from the northern regions of the country to the central and southern parts of Nigeria, sometimes creating challenges along their routes.
“The third category includes trans-human herdsmen originating from West Africa, traversing northern Nigeria, the Middle Belt, and proceeding to the southern regions of Nigeria. This group has been responsible for several issues along their journey.
“The fourth group comprises herdsmen who have settled among specific ethnic communities in Nigeria. In the past, there was a symbiotic relationship between these settled herdsmen and local farmers. Herdsmen provided manure for farmers, while farmers granted grazing areas to the herdsmen.”
Ganduje’s categorization offers insight into the diverse nature of herdsmen in Nigeria and their varying relationships with local communities.
