Adams Oshiomhole has taken a jab at Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and his wife, Betsy, over their lack of children.

The former governor of Edo State, who now represents Edo North in the 10th Assembly, made these remarks in response to comments made by Betsy Obaseki during a campaign event. Mrs. Obaseki had praised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate, Asue Ighodalo, as the only candidate with a wife, highlighting the importance of having a woman in the Government House.

During the PDP’s campaign flag-off at the Ubiaja Township Stadium in Esan South-East Local Government Area, Mrs. Obaseki introduced Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, the wife of Asue Ighodalo, to the crowd. She emphasized that having a woman in the Government House would bring positive changes for the women of Edo State.

“Let us vote for the best candidate in this coming election, and I want to introduce the wife. Incidentally, among all the candidates, only one has a wife, and it’s our own party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo. Only he has a wife. This is the wife, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo,” Mrs. Obaseki stated.

“Edo women, know that only one candidate has a wife. Better things come to women when there’s a woman in the Government House. All women in Edo, regardless of party, should see the candidate who has a wife. They will take us higher—only the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo,” she added.

In his reaction on Saturday, Oshiomhole criticized Mrs. Obaseki for her remarks, pointing out that she and her husband have no children. He argued that they are not in a position to comment on others’ marital status.

Oshiomhole also highlighted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, is married with two children.

“I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the First Lady, saying that our candidate has no wife. It’s unfortunate she had to say that because she and Governor Obaseki have no children; they are childless,” Oshiomhole said.

“They are not even ready to adopt. I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t have children, but those who love children go to motherless homes and adopt. They haven’t adopted, and they’re both in their 60s. I don’t know if their marriage is a contract or whatever, but they have no child.

“Our candidate not only has children, but he has also invested in their education. You can see them on live television, where the first one is a lawyer, the second one is a medical doctor, and they addressed the crowd in Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North, with their mother present,” Oshiomhole concluded.
