George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), revealed this development in a letter addressed to Comrade Ambali Akeem Olatunji of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC). Dated January 23, 2024, the letter, titled ‘Inauguration Of The Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage,’ outlines the key details of the upcoming committee formation.

“I write to inform you that Mr. President has approved the inauguration of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage. The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, 30th January 2024, at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, State House, Abuja, at 12.00 noon prompt. Members are to be seated by 11.30 am. Kindly note that a shuttle bus will be available at the pilot gate to convey members to the venue from 10.00 am,” the letter states.

Labor unions across the nation have been advocating for an upward review of the minimum wage for both federal and state workers. With President Tinubu’s recent inauguration and the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, labor unions have heightened their demands, especially in the face of escalating inflation.

Back in June 2023, labor leaders had called for an increase in the minimum wage from N30,000 to N200,000, citing the pressing economic realities. The current minimum wage was last reviewed in April 2019, transitioning from N18,000 to N30,000.

As discussions on the new minimum wage unfold, the Nigerian workforce anticipates positive outcomes from the tripartite committee’s efforts to align wage standards with the prevailing economic challenges.
