Outrage Erupts As Sowore Slams Tinubu For Extending Customs Boss’ Stay In Office
Omoyele Sowore, the 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has criticized President Bola Tinubu over the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, by an additional six months.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The extension was confirmed in a statement on Friday, June 19, 2026, by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Adeniyi’s initial tenure extension was expected to end on August 1, 2026, before the new approval was granted.
The fresh six-month extension will now run until February 2027 and is intended to support the completion of key reforms, including the implementation of the National Single Window and to ensure a smooth leadership transition within the service.
The statement further explained that during this period, Adeniyi, in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service Board, will oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, as well as the retirement of officers who have reached the statutory age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.
Reacting via his social media page, Sowore argued that the Customs boss ought to have retired nearly two years ago, describing the decision as harmful to institutional integrity and morale.
He maintained that the extension undermines professionalism, blocks career advancement, and reflects a system where rules are inconsistently applied.
Sowore wrote that such decisions weaken public institutions and discourage merit-based progression, warning that no organization can function effectively when due process is compromised for political or personal convenience.
