In a statement issued on Wednesday, the lawmaker described the incident as alarming and cautioned that escalating political tensions could pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
“I strongly condemn the reported assassination attempt on former Governor Peter Obi and former National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Edo State,” she said.
Akpoti-Uduaghan voiced concern over increasing political hostility and the safety of political figures across party lines.
“This situation is deeply troubling and unacceptable in a democratic society. Politics must not deteriorate into violence, intimidation, or threats against perceived opponents,” she stated.
She also warned against the conduct of what she described as overzealous political actors.
“I am particularly worried about individuals who, in an attempt to prove loyalty to Mr. President or any other political leader, resort to harassing or attacking opposition members. Such actions are irresponsible, counterproductive, and harmful to national unity,” she added.
The senator stressed that democracy depends on fair competition and the protection of opposing viewpoints.
“Democracy flourishes through healthy political competition, freedom of expression, and the safeguarding of dissenting voices. The opposition has a constitutional right to organise and carry out its activities without fear. Efforts to intimidate or endanger them erode the foundation of our democratic system,” she noted.
Akpoti-Uduaghan further called for accountability, saying:
“I urge security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Nigeria must remain a country where political disagreements are settled through dialogue and the ballot box, not through violence.
“As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I remain committed to defending democratic values, upholding the rule of law, and protecting the safety of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.”
