The decision to revert to the old national anthem followed the passage of the National Anthem Bill 2024 by the National Assembly, which was subsequently signed by President Tinubu. Despite facing criticism from some Nigerians questioning the significance of the change, Ozekhome believes that bringing back the old national anthem “will cement us together.”
Addressing concerns about public input, Ozekhome noted that while there was an advertised public hearing on the national anthem, he was not personally invited. He emphasized the importance of participation, stating, “If you’re called, you should go and participate. If you don’t participate, you should not cry later.” Unlike constitutional changes, Ozekhome explained that introducing a new national anthem does not necessitate extensive town hall meetings.
Expressing disappointment with the lack of patriotism among certain Nigerians, Ozekhome hopes that the reinstatement of the anthem will help restore national pride. He highlighted that the reintroduction of the anthem aligns with recommendations from the 2014 National Confab.
Ozekhome’s remarks coincide with President Tinubu’s defense of the anthem change, emphasizing its importance as a priority. During a meeting with the leadership of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu affirmed his commitment to obeying laws passed by the National Assembly, including the change in the national anthem.
