The meeting, which kicked off on Sunday, also served as a strategic platform to chart the party’s course ahead of the 2027 general elections. It was hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who welcomed his counterparts at a state banquet held on Sunday evening.
Among the governors present were Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa, Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Ademola Adeleke of Osun.
However, the absence of some key figures raised eyebrows — notably Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, who is currently under suspension, and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, who was also missing from the high-level gathering.
The governors are expected to address several major concerns, including the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, the legal battle over the declaration of a state of emergency, and the controversial suspension of Governor Fubara, which could be a subject of deliberation at the Supreme Court in the coming days.
Another key item on the agenda is the exploration of a coalition of opposition parties aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections — a move already gaining traction among influential PDP leaders.
In his opening remarks, Governor Makinde underscored the significance of the meeting, describing it as timely and essential for redefining the PDP’s role in Nigeria’s political future.
“This meeting is timely and necessary as we work to reposition the PDP as the most viable option for Nigerians in 2027,” he stated.
