Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar have urged citizens to refrain from scooping petrol from fallen tankers after a tragic explosion in Dikko Road, Suleja, Niger State, which claimed the lives of about 70 people on Saturday.
Obi and Atiku described the incident as both tragic and heartbreaking. Reacting to the disaster, Atiku Abubakar expressed deep sorrow for the victims’ families. He stated on Saturday night:
“I have been informed that the death toll from the fuel tanker explosion in Dikko, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, has risen to 60. This is truly devastating. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the people of Niger State. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
On Sunday, Peter Obi called for stricter safety measures to prevent such tragedies. He expressed:
“The petrol tanker explosion that occurred along Dikko-Maje Road in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State is deeply distressing. Reports indicate over 70 lives were lost, and more than 50 people were injured. These recurring accidents underline the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols to mitigate the risks associated with tanker explosions, which have led to massive losses in recent times.”
Obi extended his condolences to the affected families and the government and people of Niger State, offering prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.
