In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi described the arrest as an attack on democracy and a blatant attempt to silence opposing voices. He said, “I just learned of the arrest of Dele Farotimi, a respected human rights lawyer and advocate, over an allegation of defamation. This is a gross misuse of police powers and a serious assault on the principles of democracy and justice in Nigeria.”

Obi continued, “This action represents not only an attempt to intimidate those who challenge authority, but it also sends a troubling message to every Nigerian who values freedom of expression and the right to demand accountability and transparency.”

The former Anambra State governor stressed that the police’s primary duty is to protect citizens, not to suppress their rights. He pointed out that defamation is a civil matter that should be dealt with through the legal system, not through police intervention.

“Defamation is a civil matter that should be addressed in court through due legal process, in line with the rule of law in a democracy. The police must not be used as a tool for intimidation. I have personally been defamed and insulted many times, but I have never resorted to using the police to silence others,” Obi said.

He further criticized the abuse of power and raised concerns about the independence of the police as a public institution. Obi called for Farotimi’s immediate release and urged the police to uphold the Constitution of Nigeria.
