Several communities in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, continue to grapple with severe water shortages, much to the dismay of its residents.

Residents across Jos, speaking with Arewa PUNCH on Thursday, expressed deep concerns over the prolonged water crisis affecting both urban and suburban areas of the city. Amos Gotep, a resident of Rukuba Road in Jos North Local Government Area, highlighted the daily ordeal of fetching water from neighboring communities due to the absence of accessible clean water sources within their locality.

“For years, the residents of Rukuba Road have endured crippling water scarcity. This year has been particularly harsh, exacerbated by below-average rainfall,” lamented Gotep, reflecting on the community’s struggle during what should be the rainy season. He voiced hope that the current administration, under Caleb Mutfwang, would take decisive action to alleviate their plight, which has persisted despite past promises from previous administrations.

In Angwa Rogo Community, Ibrahim Muhammad echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that areas like Rock Haven, Farina Gada, Tudun Wada, and Mista Ali are equally affected by the worsening water scarcity crisis in Plateau State. Muhammad emphasized the significant time and effort expended daily by residents simply to secure drinkable water, urging urgent intervention from the state government and stakeholders to address the issue comprehensively.

Responding to inquiries, a senior official from the Jos Water Corporation acknowledged the severity of the situation, citing ongoing efforts by the government to mitigate water challenges across affected communities. JK Chris, the Corporation’s Secretary, reassured that plans are underway to expand water distribution networks and procure necessary infrastructure to improve water access in areas like Rukuba Road.

“We are committed to resolving these challenges promptly,” Chris affirmed, noting that while procurement processes may cause delays, sustainable solutions are being pursued to ensure that water scarcity becomes a thing of the past in Jos and beyond.

The community’s plight underscores a pressing need for concerted efforts and immediate actions to provide reliable and sustainable water solutions across Plateau State, thereby enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
