Plot To Weaken Opposition?’ – PDP Alleges Foul Play As FCT Chairmanship Candidates Abruptly Withdraw
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the withdrawal of some of its chairmanship candidates from the upcoming Abuja Area Council elections, calling the move “shameful” and carried out without the party’s consent.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The party’s National Working Committee expressed outrage over the development, describing it as both anti-democratic and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Friday by the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP said it received news of the withdrawals “with utter dismay.” The party stressed that democracy thrives on competitive contests, not what it termed “forced or induced consensus.”
According to the PDP, the withdrawals reflect a troubling trend in the lead-up to the FCT local council elections. The party also accused certain individuals, presenting themselves as party leaders, of attempting to compromise the PDP’s independence for the benefit of the President.
Without naming anyone, the PDP suggested that the withdrawals were part of a broader scheme aimed at weakening opposition forces ahead of future elections. The party noted that similar actions had previously led to the expulsion of some individuals as part of efforts to rebuild a strong opposition capable of contesting power in 2027.
“As disappointing as this development is, it highlights the type of manipulated democracy promoted by those parading as leaders of the PDP, whose only interest is to ‘hold’ the party for the President,” the statement read.
The PDP further warned that the incident could set a dangerous precedent. “This is exactly what they may attempt close to the Presidential elections—compelling, inducing, or cajoling other candidates to withdraw to ensure a smooth return to Aso Rock Villa, regardless of the administration’s poor performance,” it added.
The Abuja Area Council elections are widely seen as a political barometer ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major parties seeking grassroots dominance in the nation’s capital.
The PDP reiterated its commitment to democratic principles and competitive elections, cautioning against any attempt to undermine internal party processes or weaken opposition politics in Nigeria.
