Police Chief Blasts Illegal Detentions, Says It Can Destroy Public Trust In Law Enforcement

This message was conveyed in a statement released on Sunday by the Force Spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The IGP emphasized that adhering to legally prescribed detention periods is not just a legal requirement but a core element of safeguarding individual rights and dignity, as enshrined in Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantees the right to dignity and personal liberty.

The Police Spokesperson stated that IGP Egbetokun cautioned against any form of unlawful or prolonged detentions, which could erode public trust and confidence in the police. He stressed that officers found violating these principles would face serious repercussions.
