This message was conveyed in a statement released on Sunday by the Force Spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The IGP emphasized that adhering to legally prescribed detention periods is not just a legal requirement but a core element of safeguarding individual rights and dignity, as enshrined in Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantees the right to dignity and personal liberty.
The Police Spokesperson stated that IGP Egbetokun cautioned against any form of unlawful or prolonged detentions, which could erode public trust and confidence in the police. He stressed that officers found violating these principles would face serious repercussions.
In advocating for a culture of accountability within the Force, the IGP urged officers to uphold the highest standards of conduct in their interactions with the public.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to prioritize human rights, fostering stronger relationships with the communities it serves, and ensuring that policing is carried out with integrity and respect. The current leadership of the Police is dedicated to treating all individuals in custody with respect and in full accordance with the law, reflecting a broader vision of a police force committed not only to maintaining order but also to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens.
