Comparing the international standard recommended by the United Nations of one police personnel per 460 citizens, he underscored that Nigeria currently operates at a police-citizen ratio of 1 to 650.
The IGP emphasized that achieving a police-citizen ratio in line with the UN’s recommendation would necessitate the recruitment of 190,000 more personnel into the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).
Egbetokun went on to emphasize the critical link between effective policing and the government’s industrialization aspirations. He noted that a lack of proper policing could compromise the success of the government’s industrialization drive.
Moreover, Egbetokun cautioned that the current deficiency in police personnel impacts the security of vital national infrastructure.
He explained that the inadequate presence of law enforcement officers could expose key industrial sites to criminal activities, thereby hindering economic progress and posing a challenge to the country’s security.
The police chief convened the meeting as part of a larger initiative focused on defense and security studies aimed at shaping research priorities for the year.
During the gathering, the role of the police force was discussed in relation to significant issues, including industrialization, energy security, and climate change.
This meeting provided a platform for participants to deliberate on strategies to address these interrelated challenges through enhanced law enforcement and security measures.
