In a letter to the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, Johnson attributed his defection to the deepening crisis within the PDP at both the national and state levels. He stated that his decision was influenced by consultations with his constituents and the remarkable leadership of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.

Explaining his move, he wrote: “The primary reasons for my resignation stem from the intense divisions and internal conflicts within the PDP at all levels.
