Power Play Looms: Wike Announces 2026 Political Agenda, Rivers Reacts
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has signalled a renewed political battle in Rivers State ahead of 2026, announcing that political activities would resume in January despite reports of a reconciliation between him and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
His comments have reignited speculation that the long-running political tension in the state is far from settled and could escalate in the new year. Wike made the declaration on Saturday while addressing stakeholders from Ahoada East and Ahoada West local government areas, shortly after a thanksgiving service organised by Chibudom Nwuche, Chairman of the South-South Development Forum, in Ochigba community, Ahoada East LGA.
Speaking to his supporters, the former Rivers governor was emphatic that political engagement would recommence in the coming year. “From January next year, we are moving forward. Let me make it clear, we will start politics,” he declared.
Wike also took aim at individuals he accused of enjoying the benefits of the 2023 general elections without openly backing President Bola Tinubu at the time. He recalled that many avoided publicly identifying with Tinubu’s candidacy when the political atmosphere was tense, stressing that his own camp stood firm despite the risks. According to him, those who are now vocal in their support only emerged after the mandate had been secured.
Questioning the sincerity of recent declarations of loyalty to the President, Wike asked where such voices were during the critical election period, noting that they neither declared support nor mobilised votes. Though he mentioned no names, he assured his supporters that their sacrifices would not go unrewarded.
Addressing the much-talked-about peace deal in Rivers State, Wike insisted he would not be part of any agreement that could not be upheld. He stressed the importance of honouring commitments, saying any agreement entered into must be respected in full. He added that many now making bold political claims only found their voices after the battle had been won.
Reaffirming his unwavering support for President Tinubu, Wike said his political stance has always been clear, even if it has made him one of the most criticised politicians in the country. He thanked the people of Ahoada for their continued loyalty and urged them not to be alarmed, promising that further details would be revealed at the appropriate time.
The thanksgiving ceremony attracted several prominent political figures, including Senators Magnus Abe, Philip Aduda, Wilson Ake and Olaka Wogu, as well as ambassador-designate Aaron Chukwuemeka, OCJ Okocha and Ferdinand Anabrabra, among others.
