Following the tragic incident, in which over 100 lives were lost and many others critically injured while scooping fuel from a fallen tanker, some victims were transferred to teaching hospitals per President Bola Tinubu’s directive.

During his visit to the hospital to meet the injured, Obi called for immediate safety measures to prevent future occurrences of such tragedies.

“Today (Wednesday), emotion overtook me as I traveled from Lagos to the site of the tragic petrol tanker explosion, the gravesite, and Sarkin Dikko’s residence along the Dikko-Maje Road in Suleja, Niger State. Over 100 lives were lost, more than 50 injured, and properties destroyed in this preventable tragedy.

“At the explosion site and the graveyard, where 80 victims were laid to rest, I felt the sorrow of a calamity that could have been avoided. I also met some of the injured victims at the hospital to offer support and encouragement,” Obi said.

He urged the government to prioritize good governance, address the nation’s poor road network, and implement proactive measures to reduce poverty, which he identified as a contributing factor to such tragedies.

“These recurring disasters call for urgent action: repairing roads, educating tanker operators on safety, improving healthcare infrastructure, and addressing poverty to avoid such heart-wrenching losses.

“I also visited Sarkin Dikko and his council to extend my condolences and solidarity with the people of Dikko. Human lives are invaluable, and governance must focus on safeguarding them through proactive policies.

“Together, we can ensure that such tragedies become a thing of the past,” Obi emphasized in a post on his X handle.
