The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is gearing up to present Abubakar Garba Dandare, the former registrar of Zamfara State Upper Sharia Court 1 Gusau, before Justice Bello Shinkafi of Zamfara State High Court in Gusau. Dandare is facing allegations from the anti-graft agency regarding the misappropriation of ₦3.8 million belonging to the late businessman, Alhaji Ladan Mada, and the forgery of his next of kin, Aminu Mada’s signature on the Court Cash Deposit Register.
In the case registered by the EFCC with court case number ZMJ/GS/13C/2024, Dandare stands accused of diverting ₦3,837,634.46, which was a retention fee paid by Zamfara State Ministry of Finance for the late Alhaji Ladan Mada’s family on December 4, 2012, during his tenure as the Registrar of Upper Sharia Court 1, Samara Gusau, Zamfara State. Additionally, Dandare is alleged to have forged Aminu Mada’s signature in an attempt to access the funds belonging to the deceased.
The EFCC asserts that Dandare’s actions constitute the offense of Criminal Breach of Trust as outlined in sections 311 and 312 of the Penal Code CAP 89 Laws of Northern Nigeria 1963.
In another development, Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, is facing potential legal repercussions under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act of 2007. A coalition of civil society organizations, known as the Network of Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria, has accused Okpebholo of abusing the Nigerian currency, the naira. The group filed a complaint with the EFCC against Okpebholo, alleging naira abuse and mutilation, citing provisions of the CBN Act of 2007.
The coalition commended the EFCC for its prompt response in arresting and charging individuals caught on viral videos abusing and defacing the Naira. They urged the agency to investigate the viral video featuring Senator Monday Okpebholo and emphasized the importance of holding him accountable for his actions as a public figure.
