The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) have vehemently opposed the House of Representatives’ proposal to introduce age limits for presidential and gubernatorial candidates in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The contentious bill, which passed its second reading on Thursday, seeks to disqualify individuals over 60 from running for the presidency or governorship. If enacted, it would exclude prominent figures like President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from the 2027 elections.

The PDP denounced the bill as a misplaced priority, criticizing lawmakers for focusing on inconsequential issues while neglecting more pressing national challenges. According to PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor, the real problems facing Nigeria are incompetence, corruption, and a lack of patriotism—not age. He labeled the lawmakers pushing the bill as “the most irresponsible in Nigeria’s history” and pointed out that successful leaders over 60 exist in countries like India and Singapore.

Similarly, CUPP National Publicity Secretary Mark Adebayo dismissed the notion that age determines leadership quality, emphasizing that competence, education, exposure, and patriotism are the real factors. He cited examples of effective older leaders, such as U.S. President Joe Biden and Singapore’s former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, to support his argument.

Meanwhile, SDP National Publicity Secretary Rufus Aiyenigba acknowledged that while age can influence governance, leadership ultimately depends on experience, values, and competence rather than numerical age.
