Lagos is currently grappling with a significant cholera outbreak, with 21 reported deaths and 401 suspected cases as of Thursday. Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, revealed these figures following an update on the situation. The outbreak has been particularly severe in Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa.

The rise in cases was attributed to the recent Ileya festivities, which saw large gatherings that likely facilitated the spread of the disease. Despite the increase in cases, there are signs of improvement in some local government areas due to interventions by the state government and enhanced surveillance efforts.

Dr. Ogunyemi emphasized that the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with various agencies, continues to conduct rigorous surveillance and monitoring. Samples from water sources, food, and beverages are being tested to identify the source of contamination. Community surveillance efforts have also been intensified, particularly in affected areas, to curb the spread of cholera.

Residents were urged to maintain vigilance, practice good hand hygiene, and participate in community sanitation efforts. Immediate medical attention was advised for anyone experiencing symptoms such as watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, general malaise, and fever. Cholera treatment is available free of charge at all public health facilities.

Dr. Ogunyemi expressed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare for Lagos residents and extended gratitude to local, national, and international partners for their support in managing the outbreak. She also acknowledged the dedication of healthcare professionals, government officials, and volunteers who are working tirelessly to combat cholera and protect the community.
